We are pleased to announce that the following have been confirmed as speaking at the 2008 PIEL  Conference in March:


Professor Philippe Sands QC - Lecturer at UCL


Professor of Laws and Director of the Centre for International Courts and Tribunals at University College London.  He was co-founder of FIELD (Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development), and as Legal Director established the programmes for climate change and sustainable development.

Gordon Main - Spokesman for Safe Haven Community Group

Has opposed the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) installations in Milford Haven, South Wales.  This has led to several high profile legal cases with successes and failures.

Maria Adebowale - Capacity Global

Maria Adebowale is the Founder and Director of Capacity Global. Capacity is the only non governmental organisation and social enterprise  in the UK focusing specifically on environmental justice. 

Maria is the co founder of the UK Environmental Justice Network and also the main author of the Third Sector Climate Change Declaration. She has a Masters in Public International Law (human rights and environmental law) and has written a number of publications on environmental justice, social inclusion and regeneration..

Maria is also Chair of Waterwise, the Access & Inclusion Commissioner for English Heritage, a Matron of the Women's' Environment Network and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.


Peter Roderick - Co-Director Climate Justice

Co-Director of the Climate Justice Programme (CJP), an initiative hosted by Friends of the Earth International.  He has worked in private practice, the oil industry, academia and, from 1996-2001, was the Legal Adviser to Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland.  He was also a founder member of EarthRights in 1993 and is currently a trustee of the EarthRights charity.

Maria Cull - Partner with K & L Gate

Specialises in environmental law and has built a global practice.
 
She did her LLM in Environmental Law at Pace University in New York. During her time in New York she took the New York Bar. Maria is a regular speaker at seminars and workshops. She has lectured on the development of environmental law in Asia at Chatham House. She has advised extensively on the application of the Equator Principles and IFC Social and Environmental Performance Standards to project financing in non-OECD countries.

Phillip Pascoe - General Counsel for the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF)


The primary objectives of OCIMF are the promotion of safety and prevention of pollution from tankers and at oil terminals.
OCIMF was granted consultative status in 1971 at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), The OCIMF currently has 59 companies as members.

Vanessa Pena


Vanessa is a graduate of LSE (UK), Columbia University (USA), Ecole Polytechnique (France) and MIT (USA), where she studied Environmental Science and Mechanical Engineering.  She has extensive experience in environmental research, technical research, teaching and management.

Recently, Vanessa has been the team leader and analyst in a G-8 research group, and environmental sustainability consultant to LSE. 

Vanessa speaks several languages, including French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish



Richard Starkey - TYNDALL

Core researcher at the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research. The Center is based in Manchester and does research on the most important dimensions on climate change. For instance, developing comprehensive and systems-level approaches to decarbonising issues and pathways within the international arena and the UK.  

Richard's research has been concentrating on carbon reduction instruments.


Naresh Giangrande

Naresh comes from a diverse professional background, in addition to being a Managing Director of his own landscape company for many years, he has also worked in films and has taught meditation.  Naresh has lived and worked in many communities and was a trustee of the Braziers Park eco community until recently. Naresh co-founded Transition Town Totnes and then founded Transition Training. Naresh now works on the Totnes project and Transition training designing and delivering training both nationally and internationally.

Dr Andrew Boswell - BIOFUELWATCH

They are beginning a grass roots campaign for a moratorium on targets, subsidies and other incentives for agrofuels, including a suspension of the UK Renewable Transport Fuel Obligations and in Europe of the targets, obligations and incentives arising from the EU Biofuel Directive, and a moratorium on funding for agrofuels from large-scale monocultures, including through carbon market mechanisms, such as the Clean Development Mechanism or Joint Implementation under UNFCCC
